The culinary cuisine of the Cedar Rapids area is diverse. There are a lot of wonderful places to enjoy breakfast, lunch, brunch, and dinner. Egg dishes, waffles, french toast, omelets, Benedicts, and biscuits & gravy are all on the menu at some of our favorite brunch spots, and there are new things to try: a ground beef & lamb burger with peanut butter, bacon and sunny side up egg might soon become a new midwestern brunch tradition for you and your family! Here are some of the best places for brunch in the Cedar Rapids area to enjoy and discover with your friends and family this weekend.
Marion
The Morning Story: Breakfast and lunch items are offered with bravado and charm at this Marion, Iowa brunch spot (they also have two locations in Colorado). The breakfast menu includes a comprehensive selection of bacon, Benedicts in 6 rich variations (hollandaise all around), omelets & scrambles, buttermilk pancakes, and Belgian Waffles. The lunch menu includes sandwiches, salads, half pound burgers, and a whimsical selection of “Short Stories”. The short stories menu includes the Jane Austen Sense and Sensible (fresh fruit, berries, vanilla yogurt, and granola) and the Herman Melville (a whale of a cinnamon roll w/sweetened cream cheese frosting). Mimosas, Bloody Marys, and cocktails are available.
Bistro 3 Nineteen: Located at 795 11th Street in Marion this restaurant serves brunch on Saturday from 9:00am to 2:00pm. Brunch items include omelets, quesadillas, egg dishes, and a very special brunch burger, the PBE. The PBE is a mouth watering midwestern treat (1/3 lb of house-ground beef & lamb, peanut butter, bacon, and sunny side up egg). You can wash it down with Irish Coffee (proof of age 21 or older is required, otherwise you’ll have to drink your coffee without the extra kick).
Cedar Rapids
La Casita Breakfast Café: Authentic Mexican cuisine is offered 6:30am-2:00pm Monday-Saturday at this lovely and unassuming café in Cedar Rapids. They opened their doors in 2021 and specialize in “traditional breakfast with a Mexican twist”. Homemade corn tortillas, chimis, tacos, burritos, eggs, Benedicts, pancakes, and French Toast are all on the menu in some truly colorful variations. The Taste of Mexico menu includes a Brekkie Chimi (2 flour tortillas w/eggs and meat, fried and smothered in queso) and Chilaquiles (fried corn tortilla chips simmered in red or green salsa w/2 eggs on top and a side of hash browns).
Lucky’s on 16th: Located at 86 16th Ave SW in Cedar Rapids, this restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They are open Monday-Sunday 6:00am-9:00pm. They are very busy on the weekends and don’t take reservations (but they do on weekdays). On weekends they will take your name by phone and add you to the waitlist. Breakfast is served all day, and according to the good folks at Lucky’s “breakfast solves everything” so don’t leave your troubles at the door. Simply order a problem solver, breakfast for brunch! Breakfast specialties include the Country Benedict (2 poached eggs on an English muffin w/sausage patties and sausage gravy) and the always satisfying Classic Sandwich (1 egg cooked to order w/ ham, bacon, or sausage and cheese on an English muffin or biscuit).
Midtown Station: Located at 715 Second Ave next to the Central Fire Station in Cedar Rapids this restaurant serves breakfast all day, and they open their doors at 7:00am. Breakfast favorites include Thick Cut Rumchata French Toast (w/ hash browns and strawberries, blueberries, or pineapple) and Biscuits & Gravy (w/homemade white pepper sausage gravy and 2 eggs your way).
Swisher
Cedar Ridge Winery & Distillery: The good folks at Cedar Ridge make exceptional wine and whiskey (they have the awards to prove it). They also make some exceptional food to pair with the spirits: if you’re dreaming about smoked gouda and braised ribeye wood fired pizza your dreams will come true! They also serve a Sunday Brunch Buffet complete with a meat & griddle station, a classic hot breakfast station, and donuts at the dessert station (we like to call it the donut station). Buffet items include Cinnamon Vanilla Pancakes, Aged Sharp Cheddar Eggs, Roasted Red Potatoes, Applewood Smoked Bacon, Cheddar Drop Biscuits, and a Classic Chocolate Chip Bread Pudding (w/ orange crème anglaise). Mimosas are served by the pitcher!
